VeKare Ex-Servicemen Trust (VKET), Mysore has obtained a photo copy of the list containing the details of all war martyrs & battle casualties who hail from Karnataka with the name of Next of Kin and their addresses from Department of Sainik Welfare & Resettlement, Karnataka. The list contains the details of martyrs who laid down their life fighting World War-II onwards. The first Name as per the list is Pnr Vaman Agri of Pioneer Corps who laid down his life on 18.02.1943 and the last Name at Sl. No. 363 i.e. L/Nk Gururaj S of 21 RR (Guards)who achieved martyrdom during OP Rakshak on 31.05.2009.
As per the list available with our Trust, only 363 Armed Forces personnel who hail from Karnataka achieved martyrdom during World War-II and in the subsequent wars with Pakistan, China and other warlike situations / Operations in India as well as outside the geographical boundary of India.
The total martyrs figure of 363 from Karnataka may not be realistic since some or many names of martyrs may have been left out inadvertently at some state due to clerical errors.
It may not be out of context to mention that, a lot of Armed Forces Personnel who were declared missing during World War-II, may not have returned to their home do not figure in the list held with us. To cite an example we are attaching a letter written by a 21 year old soldier from Coorg District during 1941 from Malaya who was declared missing during war and never returned his home in Coorg Dist even as on this day. What happened to him during World War-II none of his family members no even as on this day. He would be 90 year old if he is alive as on this day.
Our Trust is also of the opinion that, most of the Next of Kin / Dependents of the martyrs who figure in the list held by us may have changed their permanent place of residence due to various factors subsequent to the Armed Forces personnel achieving the martyrdom hence, we are making an effort incorporate the correct address. We have taken-up the project of updating the list of Karnataka martyrs suo-motto for academic interest and for documentation for future reference.
The list containing martyrs details is attached to this mail and also will be posted in the website www.exservicemen.in. We have taken up Mysore and Kodagu (Coorg) Districts as a test case to begin with to identify the missing names of martyrs. However, the names of martyrs who belong to Kodagu & Mysore Districts are indicated in red colour in the list containing the names of martyrs from Karnataka.
The readers are requested to provide us the name & details of those martyrs’ from Karnataka whose names & details do not figure in the list in order to update the list of martyrs held with us. We wish to place on record that, our Trust found a lot of difficulty in identifying the Veer Naaris who are permanent residents of Mysore District subsequent to projecting our Trust’s proposal to honour of “War Widows” on Republic Day 2010 to District Administration, Mysore at Chamundi Vihar Stadium during Republic Day celebrations. For details with regard to honouring of eight war widows from Mysore by Mysore District Administration during Republic Day celebration at Chamundi Vihar Stadium, Mysore, please visit www.exservicemen.in.
War Heroes and martyrs are to be remembered constantly. You may kindly send the details of martyrs from Karnataka whose names do not figure in the list through email addressed to infowicket@yahoo.com, mnsubramani.af@gmail.com.
Ex-servicemen and the family members of martyrs are requested to pass on this email to others who may have some details of some Armed Forces martyrs from Karnataka.
